However, a post by Brigit Delaney, Fact. vs. Fiction, argues that even deeply flawed port (e.g. 50 Shades of Grey) can help bring some things to light. She writes "[I] know a heck of a lot more from “experimenting” by proxy through other people’s descriptions, reading fiction, and watching movies. So while some of that is just fantasy, it can still be used as a valid resource for inspiration, as long as everyone is aware that it’s not the expectation and that it’s not always an accurate account of BDSM."
That process reminds me a little bit of how I write essays. The act of writing helps to clarify my own thoughts. As I write and read my writing, I see how my thoughts don't quite hold together. The illumination helps me to understand something better, and from there I edit my essay. (I often wonder how I would have figured things out back in the days of typewriters!).
